Hi,
Have you changed the bearings(kingpin)your self, or do you know the bearings are in good nick, putting shims in should'nt do any good at all, your just moving the pins out a touch.

Do you know if the right bearings are in, if there the right ones there tolrance fitted so job done. If you jack the wheel up and hold it 12 oclock and 6 oclock and move in and out is there any play.

please report back,

Andy;)

The shims would only be of use when fitting brand new bearings and they are slightly too large as they would shim the bearing up to make up for the oversized bearing.

It appears that no-one uses them on Jimny's from the above and once the bearings are worn you'd have no choice but to just replace them.

So it appears that manufacturing tolerances have got so good that they are simply not needed any more.

With respect to the fact that we now know from Jamesey's experience that tyres play a massive part in causing the wobble effect, as I have mentioned in another post about my new wheels and tyres, my Kumho KL71's are new tyres and as such they are perfectly balanced and ever so smooth and quiet. They sell for less than Insa Turbo's but clearly are not any where near as good in the gloopy stuff.

So for me, the Kumho's are the best On/Off Road compromise at the minute. Good ground clearance in 205/80/16, reasonable off road performance expected (not tested yet) and rather good on road!!! Might be worth others considering them. I'll let you know what they're like off road in a month or so.

I had the same wobble and was quoted a ton of money to replace everything. I did the mechanic tests myself and was not convinced that any of the recommended repairs was "IT"

I finally accidentally found the problem, a $1 cap screw (bolt)
It supports the lateral bar. When I tried to shake the lateral bar, it was tight and there was no play. However, when I tried to move it laterally with a pinch bar, it MOVED.

Now when you realize what the bar does, you understand that THIS is the most important piece to prevent wobble. It prevents the axle from moving right or left, in relation to the car frame.
If the axle moves right, even a small amount, the steering linkage will make the wheels turn left. This will make the axle move left, causing the wheels to turn right.

I would suggest checking here before spending money on other parts that don't seem to be worn all that much.
