If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

As Martin says, the "automatic" (yeah right! :dry: ) adjuster is handed. I think the diagrams in the manual have it backwards....
Anyway, here are some photos of mine, the brakes work but the "automatic" adjuster doesn't seem to be very automatic.
Works perfectly with the drum off: the little arm moves the ratchet wheel, just doesn't seem to bother when the drum is on.
This is the drivers side wheel, passenger is a mirror image.
