I don't have a 4L light ethier I guess its because you gave the stick to gauge whether or not your in low

I started off high and worked my way down ever since

That's progress!! With a lever you know you have moved it. With a button you need a light to know! lol
But I will admit for normal road use with the odd bit of snow the push buttons make it more user friendly! Off road probably the older levers are more reliable??

Yep, there's a place for both types. In the Amazon everything was push button and the suspension adjuster was a favourite toy - and very handy in the desert. Oh happy days. 
But I do like the feel of a good old mechanical lever with a reassuring clonk (Defender) - but in the case of the Jimny it's more of a loud click.

It's only the models with electronic vacuum hubs that have the 4-l light I think and you can change from 2-4H at any speed upto 60mph providing the wheels are straight ahead position and you don't speed up or brake(I found a card in a jimny at work that had all this info on)

Mine has this info printed in 4 languages on the sun-visor.
You have to be stationary in order to insert 4L !
