In all seriousness it could well be a wheel bearing from the noise you described but with the metal filings coming out the diff when you changed the oil it sounds like a bearing in that was already on it's way out.
Perhaps source a cheap second hand diff off eBay and change it and the rear wheel bearings at the same time as the shafts have to come out anyway.
