Quite a few people on here have had the heater spring a leak.
A couple of times I've used the radflush, and then found the radiator has developed a few small leaks, that I guess were covered up by the corrosion on the inside. If this happens inside the heater there isn't a lot you can do except change it. You will know because the windows mist up all the time and you can smell antifreeze.
The bottom hose is supposed to be cooler than the top hose, especially this weather.
What does the temperature gauge say?
Don't forget to top up the radiator as well as the expansion bottle when it cools down.
If you take the radiator cap off a stone cold engine it should be full right to the tippy top. If it repeatedly isn't and you get a pssssssssh! noise when you open the cap, the head gasket is weeping.

Really not this old chesnut again the Pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh as you describe is the pressure that builds in the coolant sytem through normal running .You cannot diagnose a head gasket problem by checking for radiator hiss or smelling exaust gas in the radiator ok if the pressure is building to a point that it is over coming the radiator valve cap and blowing back to the exspanion bottle then you may have a problem that should be diagnosed correctly.
A chemical test or dye test is the only way to be sure TEST DONT GUESS and stop leading people up the garden path

If you say so, when cold none of my cars hiss or raise the level in the expansion bottle leaving a space in the radiator though
The two we had that did both stopped doing it after a head skim and gasket replacement.

Yes, cold engine: radiator right to the top and overflow tank to the line (I think it says COLD)
You might need another small top up as the last of the air comes out, then you keep an eye on the level in the overflow tank, it should be on the line when cold.

Yes mate if anything water in exspanion tank can rise a bit when engine hot thats why its called an exspanion tank  and when the engine cools it can suck a little back into the rad.
If both top and bottom hose are hot as the heater hoses should be it all sounds like good news
