Mudman... You did say and actually all of us had problems, Ken put a hole in his rad and had to abandon his jeep on the route home. I managed to get my hands on a replacement CV joint fron SC motor factors in Tunbridge wells today so will be getting everything apart tomorrow and hopefully get it fixed.

Reaper when either or both of the front wheels are jacked up they can be spun freely, would this not be the case if the cv join had failed?

Depends
If both had gone then yes , but if just one then i would expect some resistance in the diff , and when being driven by the prop you should also get a least some drive to one wheel
Thing is when a cv goes the diff acts like one wheel is of the floor as there is no resistance on that side
