They are referring to a MAF, which the Jimny doesn't have - its a MAP based system.
The resistor usually fits in series with the Intake Air Temperature Sensor and as stated previously makes the sensor report that the air is a little cooler which richens up the fuel. Where this tends to go awry is that the ECU uses the feedback from O2 sensor to correct the mixture so it should pull the fuelling back. If the required correction is outside the range of the ECU then the ECU will go into a fail safe mode - on an OBD1 ECU this will not set the Check Engine Light but will cause the ECU to overfuel.
You can usually get about a 5% gain from tuning an ECU on a stock engine but most of the improvements come from changes to the timing map.
