Transfer box diagrams was created by DasLandRoverMan
Hello everyone!!

First off, as the name might suggest Jimnys aren't my first language, but I do work on them from time to time.

I'm looking for some sort of diagram (exploded or otherwise) of the transfer box, as I've been presented with a modified car with problems and asked to fix it.
The vehicle in question has had a suspension and body lift, with the transfer box and gear levers extended to suit. Whoever did it first off didn't make the best job of extending the transfer lever and it broke off in the current owners hand.
He took it out to weld it back together (properly) and having done that reassembled it to find its now stuck in high range 4WD.
I don't think its going to be a hugely complicated fix, but I need to know more about what the internals look like than what I can see in the top of the box through the hole in the floor.

Any wisdom, or pictures most gratefully received!!

Grandmothers and eggs and all that, but the usual reason for being stuck in 4wd is wind up in the transmission: simply jacking up one front wheel will cause the wheel to twang and turn round half a trurn or so, and the selector will work.

All that happens is the lever moves a fork that slides a collar over dog teeth on the front of the rear output shaft, and the rear of the front output shaft.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

If its a modified Jimny it might be an SJ transfer box trather than a Jimny one.

Thanks chaps, it gives me a bit better idea of what's in there.

Pretty sure its a Jimny transfer box under there, hopefully be nice and easy to sort.
