Martin, i would rather not travel 3 hours each way to be honest :)

if you can put me in touch your "sympathetic" mechanic, that would be brilliant.

Qn, is it done on the car or does it need to be removed ?

It will need to be removed Jason but am I right in thinking you have a standard transfer box rather than a Rocklobster?

I tried to get the lever out of my old transfer box after the Rocklobster was fitted and couldn't.

It has a plate with three bolts holding it down and then when they were undone I expected it to pull out but it didn't. I stopped bothering then as I did not want to break anything in case I ever wanted to sell it on or replace it.

The manual might tell you how to get it out or Martin might know where I was going wrong - I might have worked it out if I had persisted but I was only trying to get it out through curiosity.

He is an ex-Comp Safari racer. Bit of a scruffy, run down sort of place which is therefore good for quick, cash based, favours.

My lever was out and its only a short walk from my house. He gave it a quick heat and a bend. I would have thought it would also be pretty quick to do it with the car there as well if you remove the plates and gaitors before you set off.

Nice one. I assume the stick is just a bayonet fitting into the housing. Ill have a look this weekend into getting the gator off.

If I remember correctly it has a metal ring around the outside that needs pushing down and turning to release the lever.

If you do arrange to come over check if I am around and we can have a coffee.

Mine had a ring to press down and turn to release as Martin says after you unbolt the plate above held in by the 3 bolts I mentioned. However, even with the box on the workshop floor I couldn't get it out. I span it all the way round pushed down but it did not release.

That must be the way to do it but I think I couldn't have pushed it down far enough. The spring under it had a lot of pressure behind it, making it difficult and it will be more so in the car.

You may be less of a Jessie than me though!

Hope you get it out ok.
