Marky p, thank you, I will have a go at this tomorrow when I am off nights. I have a normal multimeter. I guess thus will suffice?

Its odd. becauase I tried a compression test, and it all seemed fine, and it seems to start and run ok at first, but then gets lumpier than school custard!

I'm thinking ignition lead from coil pack to plug. They are old with a lot of miles under their belt.

Had another fiddle this weekend, ruled out cam sensor, coil pack and leads. Definitely heat related, it gets worse as the engine gets warmer. Seems to be drinking water now, and there is moisture around the exhaust manifold/head area, at the rear of the block, on the right hand side as you look in from the bonnet. Can't work out if it is oil or water, or a mixture of diesel and water, I suspect the latter as I am using water but the oil level stays the same.

So I reckon it is the head. :(

Has anyone here changed the head gasket on a Jimny, I have searched, but haven't found a decent guide to the pitfalls and problems. Or is it better to look into a complete secondhand lump to drop in?

i hope its not a mixture of water and diesel seeing as its a petrol lol on the rear of the head is a plate held on with to 10mm bolts that blanks off a water way and there is a seal where the cam sensor goes in to that domed thing on the rear of the head that covrs the rear of the cam shaft and rocker shaft

also the head my be cracked remove rocker cover and in the center of the head there is a core plug mine cracked around there

also check the valve clearance just in case there is a tight tappet that gets tighter as it warms up due to exspansion that will hold the valve open a small amount

Thanks MarkyP, I will get the feeler guages back out when I have it warmed up....and yes, I didn't mean diesel...lol. Mind you, if I did it may have explained the misfiring!
