Is that not the springs job? The damper will stay put, it just has oil/gas in it I think.

Gas shocks will do that, but the oil filled won't.

If you've undone the bottom bolt it will sort of find its natural position, i had to fight with mine to extend them far enough while i put the bolt in, if i let go it crept back!
If they're all bolted up to the car if you bounce the corner it should go up, down, then settle.
Black Jimny's don't get stuck!
