Testing a winch was created by darthloachie
I have a bare warn tabor winch that came with the Jimny when I bought it.
There are no solenoids with it and it is a series wound motor - three terminals on the motor housing
How can I test it to see if it works before I go to the expense of buying a solenoid box and cable?

I assume that its actually a 4 terminal motor, is there a "Motor Ground" connection?
There are often one connection at one end of the motor "A" and two near to each other at the other end "F1" and "F2" and a motor ground underneath (opposite side of the motor to "A")
Does this sound right?

Right....
1. Connect the ground stud to the negative (black or minus) of a car battery.
2. Connect the "A" Terminal to the "F2" Terminal using a heavy duty (car jump lead cable)
3. Touch the battery positive to the "F1" Terminal and the motor will spin in one direction.
4. Remove the positive lead from "F1"
5. Move the connection that runs from "A" to "F2" and make it connect "A" and "F1".
6 Touch the battery positive to "F2", the motor will spin the in other direction.
