I have the excact same symptom, on mine it is the back lash between the rear diff gears.

Its not that bad but it is noticable, i just live with it.

Make sure that there is enough oil in the axle, if you haven't changed it, now would be a good time, as they sometimes fill up with water, which does them a lot of no good. Low oil kills the pinion bearings, make sure the propshaft flange doesn't move up & down or sideways.

The diff on mine clonks (as you say when starting off in reverse) and if you raise one wheel and turn it by hand, it feels like all the cogs are jumping and whirring. However this is exactly the same as the diff in the garage, which was the original one that I changed because it clonked and felt like all the cogs were jumping........

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
