I am a fan of the vacuum hubs, if they are working correctly they are just the same as manual hubs, but without the manual intervention of getting out the car in the mud and thewind and rain to operate them. Properly serviced and maintained there is no reason for them to fail, and if vacuum lines do somehow get damaged, they can be manually over-ridden to get you home with a single socket and a screwdriver.
Not having studied the electrical side of the system, I guess to give the ability to drop the drive to the front wheels when in 4L. For situations when the low gearing is needed, but the locked transfer box is not. To manually over ride the hub solenoids do you just need to interupt the 12v to the solenoid? I suppose I should just go and give it a try. Then that would give you back the only benefit that manual free wheel hubs have over the vacuum operated ones.
