If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Phobia = fear of
Hydrophobic substances repel water. the water forms a bead to try to get away from the substance. Have a look at youtube for some hydrophobic coatings. They are all the rage at the moment, if you spray a piece of tissue paper with hydrophobic coating it will not get wet.
Hydrophilic substances attract and bond with the water. Hygroscopic substances absorb and hold water.
Dot 3 & 4 are hygroscopic. If you leave the lid off the can they absorb moisture from the air which lowers the boiling point of the fluid.
Dot 5 is funny stuff, it wont mix with dot 3 or 4, and you can flush the dot 4 out of the brakes with it, then leave it to settle and it separates from the dot 4. Then shake with water to remove any trace of dot 4, and again it separates from the water.
If any water gets into the system (it shouldnt.....) it will bead up and I think cause problems.

A tip for the future - put a cable tie round the pistons on the cylinder until you have the shoes back in place, then cut the cable tie and gently pull it through, being careful to not let it rub on the dust seals too hard to cut them.
You'll never have this happen again then!
I learnt the hard way too!
