Have a look at the front of the engine when it is turning over, I bet one of the pulleys is seized, either the alternator or more likely the waterpump and the squeal is the belt slipping.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

If it was driven until it lost power the head gasket is gone now.
While the head is off check the bores for marks but they should be ok with a simple heat sezure.


Before you do this it might be worth using a compression tester on each cylinder to highlight any weaknesses re low readings too.
