If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The twin cam has a metal pipe under the alternator, made of the same "rustomatic" (tm) steel as the tool tray. I know that you can remove it and the rubber pipes if you take out the radiator, then remove the alternator and the right hand engine mount, because that is exactly what I had to do.

Sounds like a good reason to change your coolant regularly and mix it strong as it contains stuff that prevents corrosion when new but it degrades over time allowing it to corrode.
My coolant is very strongly mixed for this reason.

Unfortunately, it corrodes from the outside in, the inside was all shiny, apart from the pinhole through from the rust on the outside

Its single cam but it still looks very hard to get to as it is right under the inlet manifold. I fear the alternator may have to come off.
I hope its not a rusty pipe! you've got me worried now...

If you lie underneath and shine a torch up you can see the pipes under the alternator.
The single cam might not have the metal pipe. A new one was £1,000,000 from suzuki so I removed mine, cleaned all the rust off, then coated with resin, and bound it with fibreglass matting, then coated with more resin.
Hasn't leaked again......
Yet

Well I tackled this at the weekend.... what a pig of a job!
I took the alternator off and under the inlet manifold is 2 coolant hoses, a big diameter 90 degree elbow, which comes straight out of the block into some metal pipework and eventually into the bottom hose on the rad, and another small diameter pipe which looks like it heads off to the heater matrix.
After struggling to take them both off they seemed to be OK but I didn't want to put them back in case they had a small hole in I couldn't see so I replaced them both. The 90 degree elbow is horrible to get at and exceedingly hard to get clips done up on (top of it very close to the inlet manifold, bottom virtually sits inside and engine mount). It took a fair amount of swearing and a good chunk of bleeding to get the new pipes on.
Anyway all done and the leak seems to have gone away. Not sure if there was a hole in those pipes or if the clips had just worked loose (or if the leak will come back shortly)
Thankfully metal pipework seemed to be reasonably corrosion free!
