Hi there today I picked up my jimny very impressed so far for the next few months it's going to be my only car so will be used for pay and play days at bures a bit of greenlaning and general getting about
Question is there any way to turn the airbags off as don't fancy them going off when offroad
There is a sequence for disconnecting them in the workshop manual, but it will leave your airbag light on which will likely cause problems at MOT time. I think most people just leave them connected there arent any reported issues of them going off while offroading, they arent sensitive enough. If you are having a serious enough incident off road for them to go off it is likely you would be glad you still had them connected
Hi mate, you have to be going over 8 mph and in a collision for the air bags to deploy, it may even be more!
Or if you really want you can pull the SRS fuse, that will disarm the airbag system competly, but it's not as simple as putting the fuse back in and all will be ok . The SRS systems will store a fault and the air bag light will remain on, and no air bags will work in the event of a RTA.
From my knowledge, most airbags require at least a deceleration force of around a 23km/h (14mp/h) frontal collision but this speed and force required, is different in all vehicles as not all vehicles are designed the same.
But as p1ngu32 said if your hitting something with enough force to cause the airbags to go off, then your gonna want them there whether your offroading or not. but even if you disconnect them, reconnecting them can set them off. it only takes a few amps as low as 1-2A to set them off, easily achievable through a dirty pin. and if you set them off, your going to have to get new ones and they aren't cheap. best to leave them in my opinion.

My Jimny has been heavily off-roaded from new (take a look at the damage currently on display on the front page of the website) and has not had any issues with the twin air-bags that are fitted.
