Jimny veering wildly when in four wheel drive was created by DavidMitchell
First post and hoping you guys can help
)
J Reg Jimny required it's front axle replaced (spheres were heavily corroded) for it's MOT so bought one from a scrapyard. Axle arrived, with ABS (no ABS on vehicle). Were assured by the scrapyard that this was ok. Fitted it and it runs fine in 2wd but in 4wd makes alarming noises and pulls heavily to the right. Suspected that there was a mismatch between the replaced front and the original rear axles so ordered the transfer box and rear axle from the same scrapyard and supposedly the same vehicle that the front axle came from. They arrived but the back axle was non ABS so clearly wasn't from the same vehicle. Having fitted these (as directed by the scrapyard) I still have the same problem. Thoughts please?

Hi,
As the first Jimnys were around S and T reg,. I am not sure what vehicle you are refering to when you mention J reg?
The question around this one will be "Auto" or "Manual"

The issue with axles is that the ratio changes for Auto cars and Manual cars. Therefore the axles have to match. You either need front and rear Auto axles or front and rear manual axles.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The easiest solution here would be to remove the dust seals around the spheres, remove the kingpins and pull the hubs off, and the halfshafts too, then remove the front differential.
Then remove the same from your old axle and swap the differential onto the car, I'd try and swap both the hubs and halfshafts over too, so you have your old axle insides with a "new" casing.

unfortunately the old axle has been sold for scrap as the "mechanic" who did the job said it was fine!
