Usually the "quick fix" is to reach below the dash and re-connect the actuator that has been kicked off the heater unit by you or your passenger.

Other than that its then looking for an air lock, thermostat etc (and checking that there is water in there in the first place)

Hi mate i had the same problem last year and it was as martin says, i had kicked the heater arm off. If you have a look near the clutch pedal there is two white/cream arms. Put the heater on and move the front arm down with your hand this should turn the warm air on.
it worked on mine .

Thanks
James

Is it a case of popping down Halfords and buying a haynes manual ?

At the front, by the radiator there is a white tank with a tube going to the top of the radiator. This should contain coolant to the line marked on the tank.
The thermostat is buried with the engine under the manifold. If the temperature gauge comes up to near the middle fairly quickly it is likely ok.
You won't get a haynes manual, Haynes has never bothered to "photograph a car a little bit like yours , but left hand drive and tell you that fixing anything is too difficult"
You can download a manual, google "jimny manual download"

(Haynes haven't done decent manuals since 1981, and those were reprints of the manufacturer ones)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Is the Jimny new to you? Has the heater worked previously? I ask because one of my friends bought a Jimny and the heater had been by-passed because the heater core had died. I had to replace a heater core in my own Jimny recently and all up it cost nearly $1500 which is why, I would say, that my mates' heater was by-passed.

If the temp gauge is in the middle, the heater should be blowing hot.
Taking a long time to warm up is a sign of a faulty thermostat.

On a soft top car the thermostat is easy, it is under the spigot where the top radiator hose joins to the engine, drain the water out of the radiator into a bucket, using the white key like drain plug in the bottom of the radiator, remove the hose at the engine end, undo the bolts, remove housing. Replace thermostat with jiggle pin to the top, replace housing and hose. Put coolant back in through silver cap on top of radiator.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thermostat is a very simple diagnosis. Start the car from dead cold, hold the top hose. If it heats up gradually the stat is stuck open, if it stays cold and suddenly goes hot its working fine, if it doesn't warm up at all its stuck shut.

Black Jimny's don't get stuck!
