Another Vacuum hubs thread was created by Glencruich
With the help of the various posts and how to's on the site, I have narrowed the problem with my hubs down to solenoid VSV1. It's in the shed having been soaked in Gt85, going to operate it a few times on the bench to see if it frees.
Question is, if it doesn't work, does anyone know if you can buy a replacement?
Don't want to go down the manual hubs route, as my better half uses the buggy most of the time.
Thanks in advance.

I don't understand your reason for not wanting to use manual hubs?

Hi Kirkynut. We live about 750' above sea level in the north of Scotland, so the last couple of winters, we've been permanently above the snow line. My wife uses the Jimny every day for work, is in and out of 4x4 a couple of times a day, and just didn't fancy the manual hub idea.
Apart from that, we are pretty skint this close to Christmas, and manual hubs didn't look cheap!
On a positive note, have got theVacuum hubs working! Had to re-plumb them as the steel pipes were corroded through in a few places, so used 8mm OD nylon tube (normally used for chemical dosing).
Solenoid freed off really easily, so now have "clack - clack, click - click".
Thanks to anyone who's posted advice on sorting these things in the past!

Crickey!!!

Glad you got them sorted.

It doesn't matter if they (manual hubs) stay locked though you understand - as long as you are not in 4WD on a grippy surface. There's no harm in keeping the hubs locked in 2WD.

The extra fuel consumption is negligable as is the wear on components. In the summer you'll not have them locked I assume, so it wouldn't be all the time.

You wouldn't be left with issues like you've just resolved.

That makes a lot of sense. I don't have a huge amount of faith in my repair, I have a feeling the nylon tubes will get ripped off the first time I hit a snowdrift, despite the copious amount of industrial tie wraps!

Think I'll be saving for a set of manual hubs...

As kirkynut says leave the hubs locked and just knock it out of 4wd. I've gone manual and its probably the best mod so far. Look out for some sj aisin hubs and get the adapter from martin, just make sure the cone washers are there.

Black Jimny's don't get stuck!
