Airing down tires was created by Cocopolo
Hello!
It's a couple of days i'm studying and researching about how to play with tire pressure while offroad.
Do anyone of you air-down tires when going offroad? It's worthwile for not-extreme offroaders, or is just a thing for hardcore rock crawlers?
Cheers

First pay and play we went to we were talking to the guys who ran the site and also did offroad driving training and that was one of the first things they said - lower them to around 15-18psi as it helps traction no end - any lower and you will need beadlocks
There is a guy that goes with virtually worn out mud tyres but runs them at 9 psi with beadlocks and he rarely gets stuck and is the unofficial site recovery truck

I certainly cannot answer this question, but would also like to know the answer?
Isn't the lower pressure meant to increase the contact patch of the tire, so equalling more traction?

yep it also allows the tread to bite into the mud better as it takes the shape of the ground underneath it

On my Sammi - 235x75x15 KL71's - I have let them down to 10psi without problem. The increase in traction, particularly on wet rocks, was amazing. Not only that but it made for a more comfortable ride on rocky tracks. With my Jimny VVT the lowest I have let them down to so far is about 15psi - again a big difference in traction and comfort. The conditions did not merit any lower. With my Wrangler I regularly let them down to 18 - and again no problems on a much heavier car.
So basically I definitely think its worthwhile - just make sure you carry some sort of pump if you have to drive a long way on the road, or at speed on the road.
