great thanks Martin.
I'll have a play tonight.
I just got one of these too

Might give better purchase on the bolt but I probably won't be able to even get it on....

You don't need to undo those four bolts to get to the cv joint. Just remove the Freewheeling hub, take the circlip off the end of the shaft, take all the brakes off including the disc, which is where you photo appears to be at, remove the swivel seal by undoing the thousand 10mm bolts, then remove both kingpins by undoing the four 12mm bolts on each, pull the whole assembly off leaving a clean cloth on the ground to catch the lower kingpin as it falls out. Then pull the shaft out the axle and the cv on it or if they've separated it'll be on the floor or in the steering knuckle assembly still.
I would replace the axle oil seal whilst you have it apart as it costs less than £2 and you'll be annoyed if you find its damaged and leaks once you've put it all back together.

Got the hubs off!
The king pins were stuck pretty fast. Bottom one took about 45minutes of hammering and heating and drilling and whacking and swearing and sweating and bleeding and more hammering but I got there in the end. (this was all after removing the 4 bolts.)
King pin bearings very rusty and dry, CV joint still intact with a little play but nothing too major.

Crickey, I didn't think of the kingpins being seized too! I had that on a replacement front axle I bought for mine. Letting wd40 soak helps but that involves patients which I have little of when working on cars!
What's up with your cv though?
