HELP! - Disc backing plate bolts removal was created by goatboy
I'm trying to get my front passenger hub apart to check a suspected CV problem.
I am following the excellent bigjimny guide but I've got stuck at getting the disc backing plate bolts out.
They are rather corroded and stuck fast, a 14mm spanner is just rounding them off and a 13mm won't go on. There is no room to get a socket in.
I've given them a good spraying with penetrating oil and tried a little heat but they won't budge and seem to be made of chocolate. I would try driving on a smaller socket but there is not enough room.
Has anybody had a similar problem and overcome it? Any advice?
(and no I don't have any welding equipment to weld a nut on)
Thanks in advance....

By removing the rear dust seal, splitting the steering joints and removing the c-clip from the end of the drive shaft you can remove the entire assembly to get it onto a workbench to make access easier.

When you say remove the the C-clip from the driveshaft do you mean the one holding the CV joint on? If so do you know if I will be able to drive it off by some gentle persuasion on the hub (i.e a big hammer)? What holds the driveshaft in the diff?
I suspect the CV joint is in 2 bits anyway by the noise it makes when I turn it by hand so it may not be an issue.
Will I need to drain the diff down first or will oil leakage be minimal if i end up going this route? Presmable the oil seal will come with the hub...

C-clip is on the end of the driveshaft inside where the vacuum hub fits.
Driveshaft just pulls out of diff.
Small oil seal stays in axle.
Diff doesn't need draining if the axle is jacked up at an angle to keep the oil in.

Gotcha, thanks.
I'm getting C-clip in the CV joint and circlip mixed up...
Do King pins need to come out too?
(sorry for all the daft questions, never worked on this type of set-up before and it will be a mystery to me until I get it apart!)
