Help!! Am stranded, my Jimny won't start. Sounds like the starter motor is turning over but not engaging. Any advice? Is this common? The garage are asking mega sums to get it towed away and looked at, is there an easy fix?

Stick it in gear (with the ignition off and the key safely in your pocket) and rock it back and forth a few times.

Failing that get a big bit of wood, jam it against the starter and whack the end with a hammer while an assistant operates the starter.
