does your box have the 2wd low mod done to it as that might explain why yours is not the same pattern

your 6.1 transfer box is no differant to a sj transfer box apart from the gear ratio inside so it should have the same shift pattern unless its had some other mod done to it

My guess is that as the gears in a 6:1 transfer box are newly cut gears, the gear faces are not bedded into each other, therefore there will be quite a lot of gear noise from it which should reduce as the faces wear into each other.

I know with a 4:1 conversion which re-uses gears which have different wear patterns on them from the previous use, then the noise is loud.

After 2 hours of more bending of t-box lever, I confirm, that finally we match exactly the pattern, showed above. Now there is all clear and working properly. About the noise, I hope that Martin is right and in time will be everything ok.

Thank you, for all answers!

I used to have an SJ410 and the transfer box on that whined but there was nothing wrong with it.

I now have a Rockwatt 4:1 Rocklobster and it whines relatively loudly and always has done. It has gone through a few changes of note, but remains at the same volume!

Also, when you look at the mounting system, a bolt goes through the outrigger and then through a hole in the bracket/bucket mount on the transfer box.

That bolt must touch the side of the hole in the outrigger and the side of the hole in the transfer box bracket/bucket and will transmit the noise through the bolt. I have said this before and a manufacturer of them argued that this is not the case and that the nylon bushes used in this type of installation soak up the noise. I'm sure they do their job well but the bolt still joins the two together and must touch both bits of metal and will still transmit the noise.

Once when greenlaning in Derbyshire / The Lakes - I forget where we were - before I had my Rocklobster I bashed the old guard I had on my transfer box and it touched the transfer box, causing the same noise I have now, but a little louder. A quick straightening exercise with a BFH sorted it and the noise went.

This is why car manufacturers use bonded mounts where studding is bonded into the mount welded to plates seperated by rubber. Then the rubber stops the studding touching and transmitting the noise.

I hope this helps re-assure you that it's nothing to worry about.

If I did enough miles I'm sure mine would bed in but I only do a few thousand a year.
