Has anybody had to do this? If so whats the spanner level like for DIYing it?

I just MOT'd mine and its got an advisory for it. I knew there was play there and its on the list to look at anyway. Ideally i would like to get it done before winter.

As usual any help is appreciated.

6 spanners and a socket set if you haven't done it before.

Get another differential and swap it over.

You have to correctly set the pinion bearing preload, adjust the mesh of the crownwheel and preload it.

Most likely if the pinion bearings have gone the crownwheel and pinion will have wierd wear patterns and be as noisy as hell.

Going rate is about £75 for a good diff from a breakers, you won't change the bearings and crush spacer for that.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

changing the bearings is not a difficult job to do its just you have to make sure you set the diff back up right or you will destroy the diff in a short space of time

as above getting a replacement diff is the easyest & prob the cheapest option & i know where theres one for sale too :P

They've marked it as dangerous on the advisory note. Presumably i can keep going until the diff eats itself if i use 4wd? I've not got the money for a few weeks to get a replacement unfortunately.

As i've never touched a diff before is it as simple as pulling the shafts, removing the prop and unbolting the diff?

you also need to undo the brake pipes from the rear wheel cylinders to pull the shafts out

its a easy job to replace a diff

Its the front - i should have said  It'll be part of other jobs as i'm taking it all apart, i know the discs will need doing next time i do the pads and the kingpins (again :pinch: ) so may as well do it all together.
