Sorry "unsure" but I'd disagree. Both front wheels off the ground with the hubs locked rotating either front wheel by hand would result in either the prop turning or the other wheel turning in the oposite direction, whichever is least resistance (with a standard diff or a locker unlocked). With the locker locked turning one wheel by hand would result in the other turning in the same direction AND the prop turning.
From how you have described it darthloachie it looks like one side of the diff but I'm not sure if that's possible have a look at this,

Are you definitely definitely sure it's not a half shaft?

If you read it again, prop wont always turn.......ie damaged cv or shaft or hub

If both shafts are fine, and the hub is locked pull the diff and examine it, you were only 15 minutes away from removing it when you had the shafts out.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

just had a phone call from my mechanic friend - the diff is out and it is buggered :( although the arb looks ok

I am going round tomorrow morning to collect the diff and will need to find another diff to get the arb fitted into and a specialist to do it to set the backlash etc as it is beyond our capabilities
will post pics tomorrow

so is there any particular diff I need or are they all the same?
the jimny is a 2000 hardtop with the 13gbb engine on a V

I am also looking for a specialist to fit the ARB in near or in North Staffs

any advice?

the diff is out and it will work in a straight line but as soon as you rotate the half shafts at different speeds the offside is very notchy / stops and starts so it looks like I'll have to get another diff and get the ARB put into it
