Thanks Vaxxi for your thoughts - I will do a bit of experimenting. When I first put the antenna through the bonnet I ran a separate earth to it as I wondered how good an earth it would get through the bonnet. This produced more noise so I have taken it off.
With the Sammi I mounted the antenna on the spare wheel bracket, rather like Keefe, but it didn't make any difference - it still picked up interference from the pump, or somewhere. It was also difficult to get the swr correct when mounted there. The only thing that worked well on that car was a magmount, using the same antenna, fixed to the scuttle by the windscreen.

Manual VVT, 2 1/2" lift, ORA castor corrected arms, 2" ORA body lift, 4:1 transfer box, Uprated front shafts & CVs ERM , ARBs back & front 3.9 diffs, 6 point cage, ORA winch bumper - Superwinch EP9, ORA rear bumper, ORA axle truses, Diff guards ERM , TBR tank guard, Snorkel, Kumho KL71.30.9.50 15

Cheers for the advice, I shall do some looking around then! I Did try your ebay link but it says the item has been removed so dont know if you have another link for it?

Fortunately I have an adapter for my lighter socket that gives it 2 sockets and a USB point. I have an iPhone so just use the USB wire that it comes with and the USB point to charge it. Then one lighter socket for Sat Nav and the other for CB....if I ever come to use all 3 at once!!!
