I had faulty water pump before, it works fine under normal driveing but when you rev it hard the fines would not turn. They just spun on the shaft.
Recommend Just putting one on as its the only thing left to replace.
Also make sure the radiator fan is not catching on anything like the fan cowling.
Mike.

Thermostat .... again, they donot go that often, but when they do go ... can give similar symptoms.
Its quite easy to do yourself but its a bit fiddly

My first thought was thermostat but as it had only been replaced in may and had a load of other work done........
Its an easy diagnosis for anyone, start the car with the heaters off and hold the top hose, if it warms up gradually its stuck open, if it doesn't warm up at all its stuck shut, if it stays cool for a bit and suddenly gets hot its working fine. It should be too hot to hold once up to temperature.

For a little engine, the car runs really well. It bothers me that i don't have a surge of power to get me out of trouble, but i've gotta say it never lets me down other than out of the blue o/heating moments. Having said that, it is a serious let-down then, 'cause i cld be on freeway with just me & dog.
Happens when idling at lights, driving on road....totally random, it blew me away when it happened a couple of weeks after the last time when the engine was overhauled & radiator replaced.
I'm not a mechanic & don't understand what is going on. Thnks for manual info too. Will call mechanic tomorrow am, to see how car behaved today.
