so I take it you have a sj t-case? Have your hubs becomed unlocked? because if the front prop is not moving the same speed at the rear, there is no way you will be able to engage 4H. A broken birfield could cause the prop not to spin as well. The jimny uses a syncronizer to speed up the front prop before engaging 4h

Maverick
You can change between 2H and 4H up to 80 kph acording to the manual as long as you are driving strait
and it used to work like that just fine

I wouldnt even think about moving anything in my T-Case at any speeds higher than 5mph...

and you have a SJ T-Case now ... ???
If you do, i (repeat) wouldnt chance any changing of anything in my SJ T-Case over 5mph.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

A jimny can engage 4wd at speed, because the transfer box was redesigned to cope with it. (It was a selling point in 1999; had a spiffy name like "Power command all wheel drive system with knobs on")
As far as I know an SJ, same as a Jeep or a Landrover will go into 4wd at reasonable speeds provided the front hubs are locked (=driving) as both props are rotating at the same speed. (actually, there has to be a tiny speed difference, or the teeth could be permanently out of line so it won't go in)
If the front hubs are freewheeling it will not go in as the speed difference between the front and back shafts is too great (the front shaft is stationary), but there is no point putting it in 4wd if the hubs are free as there would be no drive at the wheels..............
