I had a good look today and could barely get a hex socket on it let alone shift it, so it'll be off to the garage. Today the battery was sitting at 13.5V without the engine running, and the alternator is throwing 19V at it! The garage is only two miles up the road so I should get there without doing to much extra damage. Fingers crossed the battery will get by with a top up with distilled water or that'll be more expense

My step father in law (that's a complicated relationship) rebuilds starters and alternators as a business but we could not get much further from you.

Quick update - job done by the garage this week and all running OK. The old one must have been really knackered 'cos the car is running so much better now. Before, if I changed into 4th at 30 it would chug and sound unhappy but now it does it with no complaints. With a bit of luck the fuel economy might improve too.
