They hold the axle in place, stopping side to side movement.
Your mates SJ has leaf springs, these flex up and down but not side to side, therefore it doesnt need them.
Your Jimny has coil springs which flex and bend in all directions, which would be pretty exciting wneh you corner and the axle shifts sideways a foot or so. Therefore they allow the axle to go up and down and stop side to side movement. Pretty important really.
However they do not need to be very strong to do this, therefore they are pretty soft as standard and so bend easily when off-roaded, hence our aim to offer a strengthening service. Equally when you lift the car they then are the wrong length and pull the axle to one side. If you have lifted your car and not extended the panhard rod then the wheels will stick out more on one side of the car compared to the other. Hence our aim to offer an adjustable one.
