Engine - Information Required

Hi guys,

I'm hopefully in the process of receiving my first Jimny.

It is currently staring me in the face as I travel to work every morning, but I need to enquire about it with you all, the experts!

It is a 52 plate, with 39,500 on the clock, and I'm wondering about the type of engine it has (VVT or not), the reliability of the engine and whether it should have the timing belt changed before I consider doing a deal (*)

* The deal is to SWAP my Focus for the Jimny...

Hi Roo,
It's a twin cam with a chain so no need to wory about a cam belt.
There's lots of info on here there is a good topic about mileage where everyone was competing to see who'd done the most miles, I can't find it meantime, hopefully someone will point you in the right direction, or just search. That one's pretty low miles, mines 2001 "Y" with 84K. Look for leaking at the front swivels, see topic "what's this" caused by King pin bearings would be a bargaining point and hopefully a minum 3 month warranty for peace of mind.

Also when you test drive it, slip it into 4 wheel drive (pull the small stick back) and you should hear the front hubs "ping" into the locked position, and the 4x4 light on the dash will illuminate.
then, after a 10 - 20 seconds of running in 4wheel drive (in a straight line !!) slip it back into 2wd (push the small stick forward), and again, the hubs should "ping" out of the locked position and free wheel.
if there are problems, donot worry too much as the vacuum system isnt the best, and most dedicated offroaders swap out the auto hubs, however if your after a good working daily drive, its nice to have everything working as it should.

Also check the rear boot floor for signs of water ingress and rust (under the carpet where the jack is kept)

And despite the advert its not a VVT, VVT models were 2005 onwards.
