Problem solved.
It was the nut behind the wheel
(me) :blush:
The four 14mm ? bolts which attach the disc backing plate to the 'spindle' (behind the ABS ring). I had loosened them, and then found out that I didn't need to remove them. They were still slightly loose, and this allowed a small amount of play, which seemed to mimic a damaged wheel bearing - with the foot brake applied, the rocking stopped.
Torqued them up and there is no play.
MOT first thing tomorrow.
Fingers crossed.
