Hi folks. Bit of advice needed please.
Took my Jimny for its second MOT today - its only done 27,000 miles, and none of those were off road :whistle:
It failed on the NS King Pins, and the swivel hub is dripping oil, so armed with the excellent HOW TO, I started to strip it down.
My Jimny has ABS, unlike the one in the photos [I think], and the description calls for removing the circlip, and the oblong washer, which I did. It then suggests that I remove the four [14mm?] bolts that secure the disc backing plate, and then the description calls for removing the disc backing plate (and the hub) from the knuckle joint. My hub seems to have a locking ring with four holes for what I assume is a special tool. Am I right here? Picture below.
To get past the hub, is there a trick for removing the bearing retainer (that's what it looks like) or does it need the special tool...? or am I being too complicated?

thats the (wheel) bearing holder, just leave that alone
king pins on top and bottom of swivel
you've got most of the way
undo all the little bolts holding on the swivel joint seal from the back of swivel
undo the 4 bolts on top king pin
undo the 4 bolts on bottom kingpin
try and rotate it loose, tap it with a hammer till it moves a little. work it up with a flat blade
2 x king pins off, whole hub will slide off knuckle
bearings will drop out, replace bearing race, again tap out, new bearings in
hub back on, insert kingpins
try and get some shims if you can, set the preload, dont overtighten
theres more info somewhere on here, thats it in a very simple nutshell, hope that gets you going

I just read the change wheel bearing HOW TO, and I can now see how the special tool is needed to get at the wheel bearing - 160 ft lb force - that's nearly as much as a Mini drive shaft...:woohoo: . Just wondered why I might need to undo the wheel bearing retaining ring to replace the king pins...?

Quite a struggle to remove the bottom king pin.
Also, the retaining screw which held the ABS feedback arrangement sheared like a carrot. Drilled out and re-tapped.
All cleaned up and I will try to get the bearings this afternoon.
