Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Reader

I have got the same scan tool and gauge that Martin has - the Maxi Trip unit:

Yesterday I went through some water - nothing too bad and just as I had climbed out of it - in the Jimny obviously - it stopped with a jar as the engine stopped and I was in low first in the Rocklobster.

I got it started and got out of the course but it was barely running.

I turned it off and then got it to idle and run ok.

I ran my scan tool and got code 335 - this tells me that the Crank Shaft Sensor stopped speaking to the ECU for over 2 second.

It ran fine then though and I cleared the code and its fine now, so I guess a little water got in the plug, having been flicked there by the fan and pullies no doubt.

I'll do a bit of waterproofing of the plugs but what a wonderful bit of kit. I knew at an offroad site what the issue was straight away!

I would urge everyone with the twin cam engine to buy one of these and a CD manual and print off the trouble code table to keep in the car like wot I does.

It also tells you your engine temperature to the degree. Mine was getting a tad warm for my liking as I'd blocked the rad with mud (new rad fitted now though) but I wouldn't have known by the factory guage as it did not move.

So I have now prevented a potential head gasket / warped head and know what caused my running issue all myself for the cost of this £100.00 bit of kit.

It also told me my Cat was on the way out last year. It got through the year before but I'd occasionally had a DTC telling me that the readings betweent the 2 lambda sensors was too high, which are either side of the Cat, so it suggested the Cat was on it's way out.

This MOT- the Cat had died! At least I knew it was coming though!

Again, another reason to buy one of these.

Sooooooooo much cheaper than paying a garage to read your codes when the check engine light comes on!

Looks very like the Scangauge which I have had in my other car for a good few years now. You can see it in the pic below...

Very handy on my RS as you dont even get a temp gauge as standard.

Where is the port exactly where it plugs in?
I had a quick look the other day to try my scanning tool but it wasn't immediately obvious so I gave up

If I remeber correctly.
Just below steering wheel to the right.
Kneel down and look up, under the dash. A torch might help if you're outside.

I plugged my reader in and it just sticks on "Trying to Connect"
2001 Tin top with the M13 engine.

Wouldn't mind one of those Maxitrips for mine but unsure if one would work on my Jim.

Been in touch with the company and the Maxitrip will not work on mine.

Hi,

If a code reader will not work with it, nor will the MaxiTrip.

Regards

Mike
