steering woes was created by sjwright
Hey all
Had excessive play in my steering, and as it progressively got worse, going round right hand bends made the car feel like I was driving a boat, it didn't seem to correct itself. I was advised the steering box was the culprit and this was changed.
The play in the steering is sorted, but the weird 'boat on water' sensation is still there with the right hand turns. It feels almost as if the wheel is trailing on the passenger side. Upon looking at the ball joint there is oil there, whereas on the driver side it is not present.
On tight lock it does clunk too. Would this be CV joints or something a little more serious? My local suzuki dealership were hardly cheap when it came to diagnosing the steering box, and didn't mention anything else. Any ideas before I go back down there? Any similar experiences?
Thanks

Oil on the ball joint and loose steering, sounds like either the Kingpin Bearings or Wheel Bearing.

my steering is not very responsive either so i took it to have tracking done yesterday & they did the tracking after alot of moaning & i left there it was still no better so went home & fitted new kingpins bearings & seals & noticed the tie rods ends had alot of play in them & they never said a thing about them when they did tracking so ive just ordered some tie rod ends this morning going to pick them up the afternoon & hopefully it will feel alot better then

Yes, there are two on "each side".
One pair on the rod leading from the steering box to the hub and one pair on the rod joining the two hubs together.
