Jimny 99 Rocker Cover Oil Leak was created by bertbuckie
Before I start I appologise for the small pictures and the frequency of which they are uploaded in individual posts. I am on GPRS internet via android wifi tethering.....no broadband..... not even a 3G signal :( - If mods want to join the posts to make it better please feel free :)

Well.... after yesterdays fiasco with a snapped brake caliper bolt I decided to interfere with a more technical part of my car today...... the rocker cover.
I noticed a while ago ( well someone pointed out to me at the 4x4 day at Memsie ) that I had a lot of oil on top of my gearbox :/ So I monitored oil levels and determined the engine oil was slowely dropping and it appeared to be comming from the rear of the rocker cover.

Bieng a tight scotsman I didnt buy a new gasket..... hell no! I might be able to make do with the one already there lol......time will tell I guess!

Heres what I did incase it works and anyone else has the same problem............

First..... looked at the engine a bit......

Right.... as you can see in the pics martin kindly uploaded for me.....
oil leaked everywere :(
Took all rocker cover bolts out
took off pipes / plugs / wires
cleaned every gasket surface
cleaned gasket
used RTV silicon in gasket seat and on gasket flat edge ( didnt go mental with RTV..... too much would be bad I think )
Stuck it all back togeather again :)

Will wait untill tomorrow or the next day to ensure its set to trial it.....also need to clean all the old oil off to see if its still leaking :( - if it is I will buy a new rocker cover gasket lol..... this might be a cheap fix tho :)

Ohhhh..... and note the rocker cover gasket deformitiy..... strange and this is where most the oil was leaking from :(

Overtightening the fixing bolts distorts the gasket, overcompresses it and causes it to leak as it hardens with age. Once they start to weep oil (they all do that sir!) the garage response is to nip them up a bit more, that works for a few hundred miles. Replacement is the only solution.

Got the same trouble on our little Corsa. I bought a new gasket once, but a spray of degreaser every now and again seems to do the trick.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
