is it worse when its been a frosty night?
One of my old cars would start fine if it was mild but wouldn't start if it was cold - turned over too slow to start the engine
turned out to be the starter motor

I had this same problem and it WAS my battery.
The thing was that my starter had be sticking on due to it being full of clutch dust. Now my Father in law is a starter motor and alternator reconditioner - so no troubles there. He re-built my starter not long before I'd had the trouble and when I mentioned the problem after I had checked and cleaned all earths - that didn't need cleaning - he immediately said - battery.
I was about to upgrade the battery as I was adding a winch etc, and the car is not my everyday transport, so it didn't matter too much.
As soon as I connected up my new Numax winch battery it span the starter over so quick I couldn't believe it.
I think that the standard Jimny battery size and cold cranking ability is a bit less than it ought to be and it suffers as a result.
My battery was less than a year old but the vehicle stood without use regularly which didn't do it any good, but it still showed good on a voltmeter.
