If you drive a Jimny in rear wheel only, the front axle and therefore the front diff. do not rotate. If you weld the front diff. and select 4 wheel drive and then drive in a straight line you will have the benefit of 4 wheel drive. The problem is you cannot drive in a straight line for any practical time so each time you attempt to drive in a normal line your front tyres are trying to turn at different speeds and therefore one or both are loosing grip. You cannot get away from the science. The inside tyre wants to turn at a slower speed and a welded diff. prevents this from happening.
This idea is basically flawed and dangerous.

It's no different to fitting the front with a spool or a locked diff and they work wonders off road. Coupled with selectable 2 wheel drive low range and you are basically golden, if there is enough traction so you only need low for control then you won't really need 4x4 and if there is not enough traction that you need 4x4 then the front wheels can slip as they need to so you can go where you want.

Oh and don't forget that either manual or vacuum operated hubs disconnect the wheels from the drive anyway so you don't even push the shafts with the wheels in 2 wheel drive.

Roger, we had this discussion around 5 years ago when I first welded the diff. 5 years later it's still in my car, has caused zero issues and is one of the best modifications I've ever made to a 4wd.

I covered Lamberts comment in my first sentence. I watched Busta and his Jimny as he demonstrated his ability to turn circles on a patch rough ground. He had to drive quickly to try and negate the effect of the locked diff.
I could argue the point ad infinitum but it is pointless, you either understand my point of view or Bustas.

I demonstrated that it turns perfectly well driving slowly, and turns even tighter with more power.
Anyway, we know you (Roger) don't like the idea. I love it. Let's move on.
What are Roger's "best use of budgets"?
