Ok so first things first don't look at or criticise the condition of cleanliness of the paint I've been busy. Secondly because I can't count 2 of the bars are just resting because 7 x 4 isn't 20 it's 28, like I said I have been busy. Thirdly because of point 2 the spacing is off in the driver side. Fourthly I haven't oiled it yet as I need to get the rest of the hardware and then take it apart and oil everything in one go.
However notwithstanding the above I'm really quite taken with it. See also the happy hamper for those refined days out on the stately houses front lawn.

I'm not certain that I'd go for that "style", but I am curious, what is the weight of the timber like, when compared to either steel tubes or aluminium?
I'm "on the fence" as to a roof rack/bars on my Jimny, (because of the low roof load limit), but I need somewhere to put my recovery boards, and the roof is the most logical place.
Previous vehicles (which is what I was driving when the recovery boards were purchased) were larger, had higher roof load limits, and I used a steel tube style roof basket on those.

Major's tip; push the battens to one side of the bars and then you will be able to get the joists home too in one trip.
Just kidding, looks good, I am a big fan of using wood where possible, is it Iroko? If so strong and light

I intend to weigh it when it's all together but I'd say sub 6 kg with the cross bars, they're stainless and quite sturdy but the shipping weight of the iroko was 3kg with packaging. I did calculate it and the wood is about 0.66 kg per metre and similar size aluminium box in 1.6mm wall is about 0.44kg per metre.
It's mainly an aesthetic thing but also is a better length at 1.5m for carrying my waffle boards as at 1.25m they are right on the same as the cross bars are apart so fastening them is interesting. It's also going to come in for occasional use if I find something in an antique shop in can't live without that won't go inside the car.

Oh and the 0.66kg is for a full planed square section of 19x32mm having rounded that over on all 6 faces it's going to be less than that. Not sure by how much though as its too late for me to be doing rounded solid volume calculations.
