You can get an intermittent front wiper by fitting the stalk off a swift. It is in the wiki I think.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Both front (variable) and rear intermittent would have been nice but it seems that rear intermittent doesn’t work. The Swift mod is indeed in the wiki (it looks very easy to fit) and I just picked up the correct part 17J500 from a breakers for £21 including delivery. Beware, a number of similar item are sold without the variable speed bezel using the same part number and look very similar, I assume they are not variable speed?
