Morning all
whist i sit and finish my McDonalds breakfast after a very stressful 12hrs i was pondering….

background
late last night on the way home from essex to peterborough my alternator belt snapped. Knew it was needed doing and on my list but didn't expect it to go so suddenly.
my recovery got me we far as halford which was now shut.
A restless nights  sleep in the jimny and as soon as halfords opened went and ordered the alternator and ps belts. 30 mins later euros delivered them and in the carpark i got them fitted. The p/s pump tensioner feels a bit loose still but couldn't figure out how to get it tighter but we least i was back on the road.

now my thinking behind the title
I find the jimnys steering almost too light. I guess im use to old land rovers with no power steering and my drag race supra back in the day when i did the v8 1uz swap had power steering deleted and that held the drag strip so much more then with it. contemplating the same on the jimny as i do a lot of motorway miles as well as bit of green lanning

curious on others thought and experience

Take the belt off and give it a try. I had a leaky power steering hose a few weeks ago and ran mine with the belt off for a week. It wasn't terrible, but it was heavy enough to be annoying. I was pleased to get it back working again.

Generally cars with non-power steering use different steering rack/box ratios, pitman arm lengths and sometimes different steering geometry to make the steering easier. It would be worth looking into whether that's the case with a steering box or pitman arm from a non-assisted Samurai and if that could be fitted to the Jimny.

The power steering sprang a leak on my last Jimny and I drove it in to the garage to get it fixed. All was fine until I went the wrong way and had to U-turn, then it was almost two hands on the same side of the wheel.

When you get it fixed, just fir a steering damper to take some of the lightness out of it.

Thats a fair point. I didnt have to worry about that with straight line racing at the pod.
Ive actually had a look over all the belts since being home now with my proper tools and all seems ok so may well leave it

Off road power steering is great, stops the steering wheel kicking back as violently. Plus in some situations with tyres jammed up against a rock/bank/verge, power steering will allow you turn the wheels when non assisted steering wouldn't.

For road use are you in the UK? If so, you'd need to notify your insurance for it being a modification. And even despite this, if you were in an accident, I'm not sure where you'd stand on Construction & Use regs. A court may well deem removing the PAS belt is not a modification and is just poorly maintained and unsuitable for road use.

The maruti jimny in India sometimes came with a none assist steering box which is the same enough to fit and work but is internally different to make it manageable. I looked into it for my second last jimny as a power saver and weight reduction for circuit driving along with an ac delete. Debatable if the juice is worth the squeeze.
