Transfer cases

4th Gen traction control sounds very frustrating! Our Range Rover does something similar. You turn things off, then just when the fun starts it all comes back on again.
A Jimny transfer case is around 20kg. Easy to lift with one hand and fit into the car whilst laying on your back without any assistance. An LT230 is in the region of 60kg.
I was referring to the fact my Jimny has more power than a standard Jimny, not a Defender. It's not a powerhouse by any means, but the extra oomph helps to break traction more easily more of the time.
Lambert, I hadn't considered that you would still have locking hubs. Yes that is a workable solution.
Loss of clearance is quite undesirable though, the standard transfer case is already one of the lowest points.

I think the Niva case has the front output on the wrong side - possibly?!

Nivas are still being made, there was an importer offering them here not many years ago. The diffs are on the other side so the transfer case would need to be run at a funny angle.
