How does one check the MAS and what are the signs that it is not working properly.

An OBD meter found that airflow did not increase when the engine was revved.

Could this be the cause of my loss of power?

Before you go changing the mass airflow sensor, I need you to understand one thing.

It has already been suggested in the other thread that the exhaust may be blocked, the engine is essentially an air pump, it sucks air in, adds fuel & fire, which turns the crankshaft, and then it pumps the air out, but if the exhaust is restricted, then the engine is unable to pump air out, which in turn means, it's unable to suck air in.

Open up the exhaust and see if the engine breathes better, either remove the first O2 sensor or disconnect the exhaust where the down pipe meets the manifold - it will be loud, but it will answer the question.

Hi Fordem, I understand your answer but the cat was replaced a month ago when the car went through the MOT so it seems unlikley to be an exhaust problem but I can only try. The only way I cause the problem to occur is when I am driving, do you suggest I drive it withe exhaust disconnected? I thought there was a normal amount of exhaust gas when I checked for black smoke by putting my hand close to the tail pipe. The friend who tested the OBS finds that a faulty MAS causes power failure in his Land Rover 90.
Many thanks for the advice.

I suggest
Find an old wire coat hanger straighten it out, make a hook around 1/2" in size push it into the exhaust till it stops. Rotate it round a couple of of times pull it out if it has some stringy fibres on it the box has collapsed internally.

The maf sensor should still increase in value with an increase in rpm.
As rpm increases, so does airflow, regardless of whether or not the exhaust is partially blocked.

Try unplugging the maf sensor.
This will make the ECU run a base map and ignore the airflow sensor.
If the symptoms are still exactly the same, (or even improved!) then that is another sign the maf sensor is faulty.
It probably won't run very fantastic with it unplugged either, but assuming the MAP sensor (on the manifold itself) is working it should still be pretty stable.

Have you tried cleaning the sensor? You can get MAF sensor cleaner in an aerosol but IPA should work fine.
