Second hand conversation between the old man who is not technical and a representative from the nearest main dealer.  Something along the lines of the fitting of manual hubs is not a good idea as it will somehow compromise the operation of the hill decent?  I can accept that asking it to work when it thinks it's in 4x4 when it's not could confuse the system but equally I wouldn't be using hdc in 4x2 low anyway as a situation needing hdc would also need the traction of 4x4 anyway. Put another way is the 4x4 system sufficiently sentient to know if it has manual hubs or is it just as mechanical as the gen3?

HDC is a function of the ABS, not the 4wd system. So it should not matter what the hubs are doing

Ah, missed the second part of the question. The system uses sensor feed back to determine the hub status. On the more recent vehicles this includes timing the sensor detection, this means it is more difficult to stop the 4wd lights flashing if manual hubs are fitted

So the hubs themselves are monitored or the vacuum solenoid is monitored? On temeraire I left the electric side alone as it was working fine and just blocked the vacuum lines appropriately and everything was happy?

Temeraire was a 2017 model?

It is all via a pressure sensor (well lack of pressure, its a vacuum). It used to be (pre 2012 ish) that the sensor was simply used to say the vacuum was present or not. Later the software was changed to detect that not only is the vacuum present or not but that a change of state was detected. This meant that shorting out the sensor pins was not enough for it to be fooled for manual hubs.
However I can see that blocking the vacuum tubes could work

Hill Descent Control works by detecting difference in wheel speeds, the wheels are then braked the same way that traction control works, so won't be affected by manual hubs. It only gets activated in 4wd, but can be overridden by long pressing the ESP button.
