I'm now entertaining the idea of reshelling/restomodding a santana shell onto a late gen3 automatic, keep the bonnet bulge and have a unicorn, could finish it in white for the full hairdresser look with a tan roof and interior, sweet!
Anyone got any time, money and donor vehicles they want to give me?

The trouble is a Forum or online group can only speculate an answer to your question. You would need to ask someone High up Suzuki to get a real answer. My guess is though it must a demand/production costs. As for Jeep culture in the UK It's not the biggest. Land Rover is main Leader in the 4x4 world in the UK. I see more Lwb Jeep Wranglers than Jimnys though so there are more of them. I won't get into a Jeep Vs Jimny debate as I haven't owned one nor do I think it's fair. However I will say that Jeeps are way more expensive to buy in the UK. A new wrangler is about 50k whereas up until
Recently the jimny was a Sub 24k car so quite a big difference. Therefore I'm not sure Jeep customers are the same as Jimny customers. You would probably be better asking a Japanese Jeep group as to why they didn't buy a Jimny and see what their response is. In the UK I would guess a lot of Jeep owners prefer the extra space the Jeep offers as-well as the removable roof and more powerful engine etc although that's just my guess as to what they might say. Fuel wise I think most wranglers in the UK are petrol although you can diesel ones so not sure which is most popular but I think petrol is. From a Jimny owners view they are more expensive to buy, run and maintain but that's just my view without owning one. They do look cool though when all kitted out.

I think Suzuki are trying to keep away from the "hairdresser" image they had in the past with convertible Vitaras, Jimnys and the ultimate example, the X-90.

Which is why I said that I probably asked the wrong group. I just searched Jimny forums and this one came up. Often times engineers do hang out on forums of vehicles they work on, but as you noted, I need to query a Japanese forum. I didn't anticipate the discussion devolving into a soft top bashing exercise though. My question had nothing to do with which people prefer and why. Lol
I'll try to find some info elsewhere and if I do I'll report back.
