Hi,

I have a rattle on the passenger side at low revs (less than 2000rpm) coming from somewhere around the passenger airbag, top of the dash or possibly from the front of the door.

Is this a common thing like the loose dashboard on a Gen 3?  I have had my passenger try pushing bits of trim when it does it, but unfortunately it doesn’t do it for long and have so far failed to find the problem.  I have also felt around for anything loose, but again not found anything.

Anyone out there had the same thing?

Robin

I found the sensor box up the top of the windscreen to rattle on my SZ5. It sounded like something around the dash by the drivers side but ended up being that box. Try putting your hand against it when it starts rattling. It would also be weather dependant when it rattled. It seemed worse on colder mornings and better when it was warm. We put some plastic inside which has helped it. I haven't had the same issue with my LCV.

Thanks James, I will check the sensor box tomorrow. I was going to mention temperature, it doesn’t rattle all of the time, but I haven’t yet decided if it’s when it’s cold or warming up.

From the driver side it sounds like the top of the dash, but could be coming from further up. Hopefully it’s not the windscreen coming loose.

If you play with the sensor box be careful you do not snap off the little retaining tags. Don't remember how I learned that ;)

I sometimes get a slight rattle from the glove box contents. Opening it and closing it sorts it out.

I have a rattle that I can't locate, what exactly is the sensor box you mention? Thanks.

The sensor box is the cover over the camera and other sensors just behind the rear view mirror.

James, Martin, you might be right, my cover was slightly loose and the noise is definately right for a piece of loose plastic.

Of course it won't do it this morning, but I suspect the engine/interior has to get up to temperature before it does rattle and it's fairly cold here.

I stuffed a couple of pieces of soft foam between the edge and the roof lining, it doesn't move now so we will see if that stops the rattle.

Soley, I did check the glove box as the rattle did appear to be coming from that direction, only slighter higher up. However, even with everything that can rattle removed and a co-pilot holding the glove box open it still rattled so don't think it was coming from there.

I get a bit of a strange noise/vibration from the engine bay at around 1,700rpm, it is worse when that range has been used for a while, E.g. off-road, especially in 4WD-L as I use 1,500 to 2,200 rpm a fair bit.

I am not sure if this is anything to worry about or if it sets the internal trim off rattling?

Check the heat shields on the exhaust, especially those around the catalytic converter, cracked welds can allow them to vibrate in specific rpm ranges, just bending them slightly will often silence them.

Thanks Fordem, it does sound a bit like a heat shield and only does it when going slow, so heat may be building up in there.

I will have a look tomorrow.

Ok thanks. Wondered if it was referring to something behind the dash, it sounds more like the speedo binnacle or behind it or the round vent by the drivers door.
