"My take on this is that there is a good chance of the Jimny going the (old) Defender 90 route if production stops, with demand from Jimny followers pushing the prices up to crazy levels as soon as new vehicle supply dries up. As a true 4x4 there is little at present to challenge it in this market segment, but the segment is small and becoming more niche by the year"

Definitely.
But l think the Jimny will hold its value better than the old Defender. Prices for old Defenders went crazy once production stopped, but have since fallen as new owners realise the reality of ownership, and sell them on.
LEZ's have hit the later model old Defenders.

Also there's a lot of Defenders about, but not many Jimnys. The Jimny rides a lot better than the Defender which was initially a surprise (l've owned five old Defenders) but l realised it's partly because the old Defender has to be able to tow 3,600kg so the suspension needs to be able to cope with that.

The Jimny is effectively a 3/4 sized version of what Land Rover should have done with the old Defender,  in my opinion

Well they have to be big to incorporate the crash survival structures and still have room for people inside and they have to be heavy because they need such big batteries to have enough range to get them to the next town because they are so big and heavy. And everyone knows more is more!

My electrocar is absolutely massive (seems bigger than the old 110), and most of it is just void space. It is like an inverse Tardis, the inside is far far smaller than you expect from looking at the outside of the thing.

They could easily have shaved 18" off the length, and 8" off the width, then it would fit completely inside a Tesco space, rather than overhanging it a couple of inches, and there would be room to open a door enough to squeeze in.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The bottom line is, people want big cars.

And as it doesn't cost much more to produce a big car, and they sell for a lot more than small cars, the manufacturers are happy to oblige.

True to a point, but it's fairer to say most people want a big car. There are exceptions and a number of people that like small cars, my last two were big full size Ute's but I much prefer the little Jimny and I am a fan of the Japanese Kei cars and have plans to buy one of those too.

I don't like big cars.  Parking spaces and garages are still sized for something like an Austin Seven, and single track country lanes are much easier in something like a Jimny.
